At Daffodil WLC, we uphold the highest standards of safety and well-being for the children in our care, including the administration of medication. Our policy aligns with the current regulations outlined in The Child Minding and Day Care (Wales) Regulations, specifically Regulation 26 regarding the use and storage of medicines, as well as the National Minimum Standards for Regulated Childcare, notably NMS Standard 11, which emphasises the safeguarding of children through effective medication policies and procedures.
Qualifications, Experience and Training
Our staff are trained in administering medication safely, and we maintain up-to-date knowledge of health and safety protocols. We have experience in handling various types of medication and are committed to ensuring the well-being of each child under our care. We hold Certificates in Paediatric First Aid, which includes training on using EpiPen and Jext injectors.
Parental Consent and Record Keeping
Before administering any medication, we engage in thorough discussions with parents to obtain written consent. All medication records are meticulously documented in our accident/incident and medication book, including details such as medication type, dosage, any side effects, time and date of last dose, and instructions for administration.
Parental Notification
Parents are asked to note the time of the most recent dose administered prior to their child's arrival at our facility. Upon arrival, parents acknowledge this information by signing a confirmation, ensuring transparency and accountability in communication.
For any new medication, whether prescribed by a doctor or bought over the counter, the parent must administer the first dose at least three hours before the session begins. This allows for observation of any potential adverse effects under parental supervision.
Self-Administration
If a child is authorised to self-administer medication, it will be conducted in line with written instructions and with parental consent. The child will administer the medication under the supervision of the designated first aider. Until needed, the medicine will be securely stored away from the child's access.
Medication Storage
All medication must be provided in its original container, clearly labelled with the child's name, and stored securely to prevent access by children. Prescription medicines are administered only if prescribed by a doctor for that specific child, and any medication received into our setting is checked to ensure it is not expired. Parents will be required to sign a form confirming the nature of the medicine, the dosage, timings and consent to administer.
Side Effects and Understanding
We maintain a record of the child's medication side effects and ensure that all staff members understand the potential implications. If the administration of prescription medication requires technical or medical knowledge beyond our expertise, we will seek training from qualified health professionals.
Emergency Pain Relief
As part of our policy, in cases where a child's temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius or if the child is visibly in discomfort despite initial first aid intervention, emergency administration of Calpol will be considered. If parents cannot be reached within 20 minutes of the incident, our trained staff members will administer Calpol following established guidelines and protocols. To ensure clear understanding and consent, parents are required to sign an agreement form during the enrolment process, acknowledging this emergency procedure. This measure is implemented to prioritise the child's comfort and well-being while maintaining transparent communication with parents. Once child has shown signs of sickness, along with emergency pain relief, we will begin the process of contacting emergency contacts for child to be collected. Parents must then adhere to our sickness policy.
Insurance Coverage
Our public liability insurance covers us for administering medication.
At Daffodil WLC, the safety and well-being of the children in our care are paramount, and our medication policy reflects our unwavering commitment to their health and welfare.
